The reason behind the theme...

This years Brush Wars competition theme at Olympia Beauty will be based on Circus inspirations. Throughout history circus has been interpreted as artistic and colourful and this title lends itself to the world of makeup artistry. During the late victorian era performers in circus’s were tattooed artists, acrobats and bearded ladies. More recently companies such as Cirque du Soleill encapture a sense of beautiful colour, styling, artistic skills, wigs and music to symbolise modern day circus shows. In fashion the circus genre is regularly featured with artistic licence at Alexander McQueen (2001) Manish Arora (2009) Victoria’s Secret (2012) Dior (2011). For inspirations research David La Chapelle and Tim Walker photography archives.

Think: Vibrant colour, artistic, magical, dark, clown, ringmaster, trapeze, fantasy, bearded ladies, tattoo and arcadia

Good luck!

Further information... From Head Judge Julia Townend:

I am really excited to be back as one of the Head Judges for the Brush Wars Competitions at Olympia Beauty 2018. This year our theme is Circus Arcadia, its a theme symbolic of fashion, editorial and film. The Greatest Showman currently in cinemas will filter through into the catwalk presentations later on this year. Circus themes have been conveyed historically in decadent runway shows by Alexander McQueen (2001), Dior (2011), Manish Arora (2009) and even adorning the beautiful models in Victorias Secret Shows (2012). This year we have created 3 types of competition

Student Category

This allows students and recent graduates of makeup courses an opportunity to create a circus themed design incorporating makeup and body painting skills to develop a colourful artistic presentation.

Teen Glam

This allows teenagers aged between 14 - 16 years the opportunity to showcase their skills and will allow them to participate creating their design on themselves. There are many young teenagers experimenting with makeup at home and we are excited to see what creations they will come up with.

Instagram Category

This initially begins on instagram with contestants who will have at least 1500 followers. The final design will be placed on the contestants own page and the 20 finalists will selected by the majority of votes. These 20 finalists will join us on the competition day at Brush Wars at Olympia Beauty. I am inspired by our Circus theme for 2018 and also to be introducing our new competitions to the Brush Wars Categories

Our judges come from a variety of working in fashion, film and theatre to cover different sections of the competitions.

ABOUT THE THEME...

The theme for 2018 is Circus Arcadia. This competition offers each contestant an unrivalled opportunity to use the circus environment and character costume as their inspiration and allows artistic license to create an individual interpretation of the theme. Having emalgamated the body painting and fashion make up competitions into one, it is your choice to use as much or as little of the body as you choose within the allowed time frame. You are also encouraged to make use of prosthetics, head dresses and wigs to create a 3D design – we are looking for outstanding skill alongside conveying your understanding of the theme.

BRINGING YOUR MODEL...

All competitors will need to ensure their models sign up for a model badge to gain free entry into Olympia Beauty, so that they can access the competition arena. After you have signed up as a competitor, you will be emailed with information on how to register your models.
