British Beauty Council Launch ‘Career Insights’ Podcast

British Beauty Council

This National Careers Week the British Beauty Council’s Education Pillar has launched a ‘Career Insights’ podcast series hosted by their President of Pillar, Education Elizabeth Barnett-Lawton, that will go live on Friday 5th March.

“When I look back on my career as a magazine beauty journalist and stylist, and prior to that my degree course (Fashion Promotion at UCA), a major pinnacle was meeting the leading lights of the industry and, as a student, going to see ‘celebrity’ guest lecturers speak. As an undergraduate, they provided a goal, a real example of a life and career to aspire to. Still today, I am fascinated to learn how our industry’s entrepreneurial stars have navigated their success. What makes them tick? What is their approach? What were the key events that led to their brand or profession taking off? What would they tell their younger selves if they could? What would they say to someone starting out now? And is their success possible to emulate?

As a beauty journalist throughout the era of makeup artist brands; Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Nars and Ruby & Millie, and then the doctor brands, Dr Sebagh, Dr Obagi and Dr Marko Lens’ Zelens among them, I would always ask the brand owners how they started. I found it utterly compelling to think of Poppy King making lipsticks in her bedroom, or Liz Earle and her business partner Kim Buckland enlisting their parents to help package up Cleanse and Polish to post out to customers. Now I’m thrilled to be finding out how a host of the current beauty industry leaders have built their brands and delve into the stories that helped them to succeed. I’m excited to be interviewing Jo Malone CBE, Sam McKnight, Sam Farmer, Syd Hayes and Charlotte Mensah and many more well-known make-up artists, hair stylists, influencers, scientists and brand owners for our fortnightly podcast interviews throughout 2021.

A shared experience from someone who has ‘made it’ in their chosen field can make all the difference to someone starting out or looking for a route to a fulfilling career. This is why the British Beauty Council’s Education Pillar are providing much needed access into the careers of inspirational beauty industry leaders, exclusively to our members. Whether you are a student or perhaps someone who has been working for many years and is thinking of a career change, we think our Careers Insights podcast series featuring a roster of some of the UK’s best talent in beauty, hair, product development etc. could be the vital boost to your dreams, motivation, or just be a bloody interesting listen.”
